TEN MOST SOUGHT UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA [2018]

One of these Universities has a student count of over 100.000 . Check them out:

   Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U) Ile-Ife:

In Nigeria, Any student wishing to gain admission into a higher institution must right a general examination which is usually written after the student's secondary education or even during it. Now, this exam is called the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board, Also known as jamb by the students. Then the prospective student may write an additional exam (called aptitude test) which is usually conducted by the University itself.

Also in the course of the registration of the JAMB exercise itself, A University may appear to be a favourite destination for the student. This might be due to Popularity or proximity and a host of other factors, These schools are considered as First-choice institutions. Please note that the information below was released by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) at its 2018 Policy Meeting at Bola Babalakin Auditorium,Gbongan, Osun State, Which took place on 26/6/18.
In 2018, these 10 universities are the favourites of school leavers and one of them is the first choice for over 100,000 candidates.

  1. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) – 86,401
  2. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) – 74,635
  3. University of Benin (UNIBEN) – 70,322
  4. University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) – 66,486
  5. University of Lagos (UNILAG) – 62,436
  6. Bayero University Kano (BUK) – 56,261
  7. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) – 48,646
  8. Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) – 48,554
  9. University of Ibadan (UI) – 47,544
  10. University of Jos (UNIJOS) – 46,082

From the information above, The University with the highest number of applicants was the university of Ilorin. Followed by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU). Interestingly, The university of |Lagos edged out  Bayero University in Kano despite Kano being the most populated state in Nigeria.

So what does this mean for admission seekers?

Imagine a single university having 86,401 applications. That's about 0.5% of the 1,722,236 total applicants seeking admissions into the 40 federal universities in Nigeria. Now that's a lot.
Normally, high applications for a university translates into Higher competition. This in turn means higher cut-off marks. So students should be wary of these figures and maybe choose a university with lower student count.

At times, during the jamb registration exercise, Most of these universities can't be chosen as 2nd choice Universities. If chosen these Universities might not even consider second choice because they haven't given admission to their first choice candidates! As big a problem this may seem, it's  the reality of Nigerian schools.

Here's an infographic to help outline properly the application count.
