TOP TEN OLDEST UNIVERSITIES IN NIGERIA CHECK OUT NUMBER 1:

Nigeria had Universities established way back before she got independence in 1960. In Nigeria, there are federal, state and private Universities, All with their respective starting dates. Some are actually well known and have built a name for themselves in the Educational scope of  Universities in Nigeria and abroad. Although there are challenges faced by such institutions such as outdated equipment and neglected infrastructure,   Truth must be told that credit and respect should be given to these humble nobles as the pioneers of the present educational system in our  beloved Nigeria today.

So without further delay, lets dive into history and view these institutions.

10. UNIVERSITY OF ILLORIN: KWARA STATE
1975
The University of Ilorin also known as Unilorin, is a well known federal university in Kwara state. The federal military government in 1975( General murtala mohammed's regime) passed a decree fore seeing the establishment of a government owned tertiary institution.


 It was previously a University colledge affilaited   to one of the original    universities in 1975. It would later go on in 1977 to obtain full autonomous status with the appointment of Professor O.O. Akinkugbe, former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine  as the first vice chancellor of the University.


9. UNIVERSITY OF JOS
The university of jos was formerly a satellite campus of the university of Ibadan. In 1975 the military administration established the university as a separate and  independent institution with the ability to grant degrees. The first Vice-Chancellor of the Unijos was Professor Gilbert Onuaguluchi.1977 saw the introduction of post graduate programs which were not quite nominal the time. It boasts a number of notable alumni like Novelist Chukwuemeka Ike,and amily amelinka. It has a student capacity  of about 14,000 and is one of the top sought Universities in Nigeria today.




8. UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR, CROSS RIVERS
The University of Calabar , Cross river state also known as unical was previously the calabar campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The male students are known as Malabites, while the female students are Malabresses. The male hostel is called Malabo. This was a result of challenges faced by the students at a time which coincided with the suffering experienced in Malabo by Nigerian deportees from Equatorial Guinea (whose capital is Malabo) at the time. 


It also has a host of notable graduates such as Senator godswill akpabio, Nollywood actress Ini edo and ita Enang.



7.UNIVERSITY OF MAIDUGURI
The University of Maiduguri, Borno was established by the federal government in 1975, as a spearhead division of a program called "Third Development plan" which was aimed at establishing new universities and educational institutions in nigeria. The university has a student capacity of over 40,000 and is currently of the most populated campuses in Nigeria.





6. UNIVERSITY OF BENIN, EDO STATE
University Of Benin, Edo state also known as UNIBEN, was a former institute of technology but was granted a university status by NUC( National University Commission). Established in 1970, The university was formerly a state university before the federal government took over.in 1975. The university is now one of the highest ranking institutions across the country.





5. UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS
University Of lagos, Also Known as UNILAG, was established
In order to achieve rapid industrialization and development after independence, Nigeria needed to invest in the training of a professional workforce. The indispensable need to create more universities to reach this goal was facilitated by the establishment of the University of Lagos in 1962. The Eric Ashby Commission on Post School Certificate and Higher Education was established by the Nigerian Government in May 1959. The Ashby Commission’s report, titled Investment in Education, recommended the establishment of a new university in Lagos, the then Federal Capital, to provide education for students in EconomicsCommerceBusiness Administration, and Higher Management Studies. In 1961, UNESCO Advisory Commission was assigned the detailed planning of the new university by the Federal Government. However, whereas the Ashby Commission had envisaged a non-residential institution which would be cited in the business district of Central Lagos, the UNESCO Commission opted for a traditional university, "a complete all encompassing institution" with residential accommodation on a large campus. Today it has a student capacity of over 60,000 and also boasts of Well known graduates such as Actress Funke akindele and Genevieve Nnaji.



4. AHMADU BELLO UNIVERSITY
Ahmadu Bello University, initially started out as a school of basic Arabic studies, then situated in Kano State. The northern region at that time upgraded the school to become ahmadu bello university for arabic and islamic studies named after alhaji ahmadu bello. A law was passed by the northern legislature in 1961 in the wake of the new University which saw the naming of the school after alhaji ahmadu bello.



3. OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY

Obafemi Awolowo University, was established in 1962
But under the name of the university of ife. It would later be renamed as obafemi awolowo university in May 12th 1987.In October 1960, the Ashby commission recommended additional (regional) universities in the northern and eastern regions of Nigeria and another federal university in the Lagos protectorate,but none in the more educationally advanced western region which had a 'free and universal primary education' program. OAU Is currently one of the most recommended Universities in Nigeria.





2. UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA
University Of Nigeria, Nsukka, commonly referred to as UNN, is a federal university located in Nsukka, Enugu State, Nigeria. Founded by In 1955 By Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe. The University of Nigeria has three campuses namely Nsukka, Enugu, and Ituku-Ozalla all located in Enugu State.
The University of Nigeria was the first full-fledged indigenous and first autonomous university in Nigeria, which had the ability to grant Nigerian degrees as at that time the university of Ibadan could only grant London degrees.



1. THE UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN(UI)
The University of Ibadan, is the oldest Nigerian university, and is located five miles (8 kilometres) from the centre of the major city of Ibadan in Western Nigeria. It is popularly known as Unibadan or UI.
The origins of the university are in Yaba College, founded in 1932 in Yaba, Lagos,as the first tertiary educational institute in Nigeria. Yaba College was transferred to Ibadan, becoming the University College of Ibadan, in 1948.The university was founded on its own site on 17 November 1948. In late 1963, on the university playing-fields, with a celebration marked by talking drums, the Rt. Hon. Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, first Prime Minister of independent Nigeria, became the first Chancellor of its independent university. The first Nigerian vice-chancellor of the university was Kenneth Dike, after whom the University library is named.
